Rift is rapidly closing it on the one year anniversary in March of this year.  With both the start of the new year and the upcoming one year anniversary of the game, let’s look at some of the most popular predictions for Rift in the coming year.

1) Rift Going Free To Play – There is a lot of talk about the game going free to play in the next year.  The reason this prediction is popular is because of the multiple other MMOs coming out this year, including Guild Wars 2 and Mists of Panderia.  This is not even including Star Wars, which just came out.  The problem with this prediction is that it has already been squashed by Trion on multiple occassions.  They have already stated that the game is doing well financially and they have no reason for it to go free 2 play at this time.  Chances of Happening in 2012:  0%

2) RvR Zone – Many of the PvPers in the game are hoping for a shot in the arm for the PvP game by inserting a raid versus raid PvP zone.  This zone would probably end up being a large PvP area with a faction either defending or attacking a certain area.  The prize for capturing the area could be anything from an area wide buff to a special PvE raid only available to the winning faction.  In a recent interview, Hal Hanlin already said they are planning to drive a wedge between the factions.  The best way possible to do that would to add a RvR zone.  Chances of Happening in 2012:  99%

3) Server Merger – There is a lot of predictions about Trion merging servers soon to help increase populations on shards.  If you are looking at the base statistics, it would appear that server mergers would be beneficial since many shards are only reaching a maximum of medium occupancy even at peak times.  Don’t be surprised to see a server merger happen in the first half of this year.  Chances of Happening in 2012:  80%

[EDITOR'S NOTE: It's happening already!]

4) Box ExpansionWith the game approaching the one year mark, many people are speculating that we will see an actual box expansion for Rift.  This expansion would include a raising of the level cap to 60 and opening up new areas for leveling and raiding.  While it may be possible, Trion has added enough with new raids, new areas, planar attunement, and instant adventures that they really do not have to have a box expansion in 2012.  With the speed that Trion is putting out new content, I’m not even certain if they ever have to release a box expansion where they have to raise the level cap.  Chances of happening in 2012:  10%

5) Arena – This is another feature that a lot of PvP players are requesting to be added into the game.  However, this is a feature that PvPers should not be expecting.  If competitive arena is added to the game, it adds in more balancing issues that Trion will have to take time to fix.  In turn, if something is retuned for arena, it will likely become broken in PvE, which is where Trion has seem to be focusing much of its resources.  Many players would much rather have Trion keep pumping out new PvE content and adding new warfronts instead of balancing the game around the small arena community that would likely arise from them.  Chances of happening in 2012:  0%

There are a lot of other predictions out there for Rift in 2012.  Some have more validity than others.  Regardless of what happens, you can be sure that 2012 will be a great, although challenging, year for Rift and Trion.

“I’m not even certain if they ever have to release a box expansion where they have to raise the level cap.”
I am.  Tanks are already reaching nearly absurd levels of mitigation/avoidance percentages.  Point for point, mitigation / avoidance becomes more valuable as you get closer and closer to 100%.  If a player goes from 50 to 60% mitigation, they only reduce incoming damage by 20%, but going from 80% to 90% reduces incoming damage by half.

Toughness can easily be scaled from one tier to the next, but block, dodge, and armor will always go up and up.  Eventually they will need to either introduce a “lightwell aura” that reduces all tank stats by X%, or up the level cap so they can start over.

Normally, I’m pretty kind to people who write columns because I’ve done it a couple of times, and I know it’s not easy. That being said, this is a bad column. I hope you take this criticism as just that, and not as flaming Redhawks… Also, your editor deserves a good heap of the blame, here.

First off, the numbers are arbitrary and unfounded. 0% chance of going free to play? What if Trion’s user base starts a mass exodus to GW2 and MoP and Trion feels compelled to squeeze revenue from somewhere to pay back investors? What about hybrid f2p models like WoW’s free-to-20 or going free, but with the normal subscription buying you everything that would otherwise be charged piecemeal? We just can’t know. I’d say the f2p chances are low, given Trion’s stance, but zero? No.

Another example: for your rationale in setting a 0% chance for arenas, you say, “ Many players would much rather have Trion keep pumping out new PvE content and [...] warfronts…” That’s not really a big factor, though, and it certainly does not eliminate the possibility. I’d say the chance of getting arenas this year is low to moderate, but I’ve seen no official word either way.

    A few other details:

    1) As someone else mentioned, the level cap rise is inevitable, unless they add some really strange mechanics to defeat stat-inflation. Also, an MMO without a level cap rise after a year or two will be seen as stagnant.

    2) You speculate that a box expansion would involve raising the level cap to 60. Why? Because WoW did (actually, they did that before their first expansion). Because it’s a round multiple of 10? Why not level 55? Why not 100? I don’t think we can predict that one, clearly, right now.

    3) Overall, you seem to be mapping WoW features to Rift, and suggesting how likely they are. The problem is that the majority of the market pressure of Rift right now is from TOR and upcoming games. GW has a very different gaming model than traditional MMOs. What’s the likelihood of some of that being added to Rift? TOR has a very different PvP model while leveling (all stats normalized and one pre-max bracket) what’s the chance we’ll see that? I’ve heard a lot of speculation about the addition of new classes, souls or roles. Let’s talk about that. Trion has even publicly mentioned other things they won’t be doing.

Well, aren’t you mister smarty pants. This article, as clearly stated, is based around ‘predictions’ and ‘speculation’ – similar to YOUR predictions and speculation at the tail of each of your beautifully crafted (yet strangely troll’ish) paragraphs. Please just accept this article as an individual’s opinion on what may, or may not, occurr in 2012. Personally, I disagree with some of these predictions yet I don’t feel the need to write a pompous, smart-alecky and generally unkind response in return. Thats is of course until I read your post. Good day.

You’ve missed the point of my comment entirely. You can’t say there’s 0% chance of something happening if there’s some change that it will. That’s just inaccurate. You can say that you’d rather not see it happen. You can say that you think the community would rather not see it happen. You can say that it’s been denied by Trion, but the only thing with a 0% chance is that Rift will buy Time Warner and include Superman in 1.9 (and I’m rounding down the very low probability, there).

Also, “smarty pants”? Really? You didn’t write that, did you?

Anyway, feel free to respond to any one of my many points rather that just flaming. I’ll be happy to explain myself if it’s required.

“In a recent interview, Hal Hanlin already said they are planning to drive a wedge between the factions.”
Didn’t they clarify that this was just going to be a drunken brawl of sorts for the 1st anniversary? Beyond that, the reasons you gave don’t really point to an RvR zone being 99% likely.

    • Redhawks

In my defense, the article was written prior to the clarification on this. On the other hand, with the changes in 1.7 with PvP rifts granting an area wide bonus, I will take it as the general idea being true of PvP granting a buff for the area.

Not being a poindexter yet still pointing this one thing out :RvR stands for Realm versus Realm as opposing raid vs raid

Would love to see a paid expansion. It would be a great way of letting old unsubsribed players to come back to the game and getting new players as well especially after the release of GW2 and The Secret World. Lets not forget that Trion has a hugely positive reputation and not every MMO studio can brag about that.
They could also add some new starter areas, which would make the game feel more open-ended and make leveling alts less monotonous.

Some new features that could make the game cater more to sandbox players would also be welcome. Just look at Archeage in Korea for inspiration.

Also, why not make special PvP areas, with a limited number of skills to be loaded inspired on DotAs gameplay.

Some weapon Appearance Slots would be nice
