In details revealed yesterday in a Massively article, we found out that Trion is including some very cool pricing bonuses that affect everyone interested in the expansion. Players who have already purchased RIFT will be able to receive Storm Legion for a discounted price, and on top of that– if players new to the game are interested in giving it a try, they will receive the original RIFT game free when purchasing Storm Legion.

This move from Trion is a surprise to many fans, and a good one. It helps players new to RIFT easily delve into the game, and returning players get a bonus of their own. It’s smart. In a world of MMOs where new players often have to purchase expansion on top of expansion, Trion seems to be one step ahead of the competition here, especially if this pricing method continues in future expansions. In the official forum thread about this news, one player sums it up nicely:

“These Trion people are crazy. It’s like they want to make ridiculous amounts of money from happy customers, instead of insane amounts of money from soon-to-be-ex customers.”

Seriously, great move, Trion!

Aside from the quality content that never ends, great customer care is why I’m with Trion. That’s why I play Rift.

      Same here.

C’mon, Laura.  Try to be objective just this once.  There hasn’t been any price announced yet at all, so what this all means is that existing subscribers get the expansion for one price and new subscribers get the expansion plus the original for a bit higher price.

I just wanna see what the CE has

sometimes i have the feeling that authors are paid by trion for glorifiying them

“free”…. people keep using that word here and I don’t think it applies.

If Rift+SL costs X, and SL on its own costs Y…. and X>Y then the original Rift is NOT free.  It may be included for what most other companies charge for an xpac… but unless X=Y it is not free.

I think this “it’s not free” is just semantics, honestly. There is fair arguments for both sides of it, largely because we have no idea what they were planning on charging in the first place.

it’s not semantics, it’s the bloody meaning of the word. If “bundle pack” costs more than “base pack” then whatever is in that bundle costs something. “Costs Something” is the very opposite of free.
