The team at Trion seems to have fallen in love with hosting live streams. Not that I’m complaining– quite the opposite, in fact. What’s not to like? We get the chance to see a little of what goes on behind the scenes (and see staff members make fools of themselves!), we get to watch some juicy Storm Legion beta action, and we even get a chance to ask the team some questions. Trion has quite the ambitious schedule of live streams planned proceeding the launch of Storm Legion, and yesterday that schedule was kicked off with a stream focusing on the questing and dynamic content of Storm Legion.
The entire stream’s available on Trion’s TwitchTV page for your viewing pleasure, or if you’d like a rundown of the highlights, my random commentary, and any new information that was revealed, keep reading. Oh, and as a warning– the actual stream does contain some spoilers of early Storm Legion storyline quests. During my writeup, I’ll steer far away from spoilers as possible!
Yesterday’s live stream focused all around the choices players have in Storm Legion. While leveling, choices are literally everywhere. Players can complete story quests that are accepted from NPCs, Carnage quests that are automatically picked up and turned in when enemies are killed, quests that are started by random objects out in the world, and take part in Instant Adventures, dungeons, rifts, invasions, onslaughts, zone events, and PvP in order to fill up those XP bars.
We’ll be seeing some changes to the standard questing system, including the addition of more quests that are naturally obtained out in the world and turned in automatically, allowing the player to click a button on their UI and grab the reward– without having to trod back to an NPC hub. This will feel familiar to players who enjoyed questing on Ember Isle. There will be NPC quests still, and these will generally be story related and a little more interesting than the somewhat generic Carnage quests, which happen automatically even without having to accept a quest.
Moral of the story? In Storm Legion, there’s something for everyone. Every zone also has IAs, which will undoubtedly be popular for leveling. The team talked about leveling being kind of like snorkeling, or in general, exploring. A player starts a quest, gets distracted by shinies, then invasions, a zone event, IAs, etc., then realizes they’ve veered off-course, and eventually heads back to complete the original quest. For anyone who tried Guild Wars 2, this type of leveling and exploring may sound very familiar, and it’s a solid move for RIFT, in my opinion. Choices are awesome.
During the stream, Elrar played as a Defiant Dwarf (that cheater…) in the new zone of City Core, which is for levels 52-53. This area takes place after Cape Jule. He spent the 40 minutes searching for missing expedition members, killing mutants, getting distracted by all sorts of shinies, and spying. He ended up finishing the story quest chain by running from a giant beast, and hopping off into the next zone– escaping into Eastern Holdings, which will carry players to around level 56.
Going back to shinies, however, the Trion team did talk a bit about something we haven’t heard too much on yet– Storm Legion’s puzzles. Yes, we’ll be getting new puzzles. Six new puzzles, in fact. Puzzles are a little different this time around, and a little more complicated. For instance, in some zones, players will have to complete an artifact collection that will unlock the ability to access the area’s puzzle. Some of the puzzles will even kill the player if they’re done incorrectly.
Hard-to-reach artifacts will be fairly prominent, and there will be more than twice the number of current cairns per area. Elrar hopped his way to one cairn during the stream, shown above. He also showed us an achievement for climbing the area’s huge vines and diving into the water far below. It sounds like Storm Legion’s aiming to be quite an explorer’s paradise.
During the stream, a couple of new UI elements were displayed. The first, shown to the right, is a UI element that appears during certain quests. The yellow arrows guide the player to the next objective, reducing the need for players to constantly peer at their maps. The team referred to the arrows as a sort of GPS.
There is also a new general UI element that shows up on RIFT’s unit frames. When an absorption shield-type ability is used, a blue bar that runs over the health bar will pop up. This absorption bar can be found on player frames, target frames, party frames, and enemy frames. The blue bar designates that the player/mob has a shield to burn through before actually taking damage. With the new changes to some of the game’s absorption abilities, I can see this UI element being pretty handy.
Here’s a list of some of the other random bits of information given during the stream:
- We’ll be getting two new mount speeds, but the team wasn’t entirely sure what speeds those are yet.
- The leveling dungeons tie in close to the story.
- Lore-wise, Defiants and Guardians will be working together (albeit reluctantly) for the most part, but there will still be some separations between story quests.
- Current raid gear and epic PvP gear won’t be replaced right away while questing.
- Elrar talked about a RIFT 1.11 PTS PvP playtest taking part on Monday, October 15th at 4 PM PST. The Trion team’s inviting everyone to take part, test out the class changes in a PvP environment, and try and kill off some devs. Players who contribute to a dev kill will get a title– “the Rebellious”.
The team also plugged all of the upcoming planned live streams. There is a tentative schedule posted on Trion’s TwitchTV page. Here it is:
