This week we sit down with Mark Jacobs and discuss his Kickstarter project: Camelot Unchained. Our conversation ranges from what to expect in the game to going over his founding principles and getting to the bottom of what he wants his game to become. Camelot Unchained looks to bring old school RVR/PVP ideals to a modern game. While not shooting for a AAA game created to support millions of players; Mark Jacobs hopes to fashion a game for RVR players only. Not sacrificing design to make everyone happy, Camelot Unchained hopes to bring RVR to its niche market.

One of the problems with diving back into the world of Telara on an alt or completely new character is the fact that, well, RIFT’s quests aren’t always that exciting. Sure, some of the quest chains are awesome. Some entire maps are awesome. I’m a huge fan of Gloamwood and Iron Pine Peaks, for example. Other maps, for me, prove a little more difficult to muddle through the second or third time around (Scarwood Reach and Scarlet Gorge, I’m looking at you). I don’t know what it is about the 30-40 leveling hurdle, but for some reason, my alts always get stuck there.

I don’t think I’m the only one with similar leveling hurdles, either, because many new players that are trying out RIFT for the first time find themselves a little underwhelmed at around the same levels. Trion was pretty quick to notice one of the glaring issues at these levels and have since changed the entire look of Scarwood Reach. The lush, green surroundings are a huge improvement, believe me, but there’s still… something off about the 30-40 level range.

Maybe it’s the fact that both Scarwood Reach and Scarlet Gorge share similar arid, war-torn environments. Moonshade Highlands always seems like a breath of moist air after questing in other areas, and it, of course, is. Until you know, Droughtlands comes into play. Ugh. As silly as it may sound, our questing environments matter, because they help immerse us and make us feel involved.

I think, in part, that’s why for those of us with characters at endgame, Ember Isle is so exciting to wander around in. Ember Isle has a bit of everything– gorgeous shoreline, lush forests, dangerous peaks, and tons of currency and PA to gather. Trion, take note of this. Just in case, you know, you guys are developing an awesome, new city for us to wander around in the future. Mmm, new city…

Where was I? Ah, yes, leveling hurdles. There are currently a couple ways of overcoming these hurdles. First, players can skip questing altogether, and level through dungeons, rifts, warfronts, or some combination of all of those. All ways are quite possible, and can be pretty fun. I personally am having way more fun than I thought I would by just running around to the nearest rifts and planar tears on my Rogue. I find myself ahead of the leveling curve, and with a solid chunk of planarite that will only help me when I reach level 50.

Leveling through dungeons and warfronts isn’t quite as simple. Possible, sure, but in the case of dungeons, players may have to learn to embrace all of the roles of their class if they plan to make the most of the queue. Not that this is a bad thing– I encourage any player new to RIFT or to a particular class to try out all of the possible roles. That’s where RIFT branches off from the “other” MMOs. We’re free to experiment and do a little bit of everything. It’s encouraged, it’s allowed, and it’s fun. Learn to tank, learn to heal, and learn to plunk away at motifs! Just uh, don’t fall asleep doing the last one.

Warfront queues move quicker, but twinks (players with maxed-level characters who intentionally create a set of “perfect” gear for their lower-level alt in order to perform well in PvP) often get an advantage when it comes to playing against newer players. Many players are frustrated regarding the issue, but unfortunately there isn’t a lot that can be done about it unless Trion decides it’s necessary to do so.

The remaining solution? Powering through the levels with the realization that yes, better things are to come. RIFT’s endgame is where the action’s at, and levels 40-50 are quite amazing as well. Some of my best RIFT memories took part during these levels, where the maps get large, expansive, and there are multiple goodies to start working toward as far as planarite, sourcestones, and crafting materials are concerned.

Speaking of better things, Instant Adventures while leveling, which are currently in development, should be amazing for alts and players new to RIFT. Paired with the mentoring system which is now on the public test shard, I think many of these sluggish leveling spots will easily become rectified. I talked about this subject a few weeks ago.

There’s also always the possibility of Trion going back and adjusting the leveling content again, to help new players look at questing through a different colored lens. World of Warcraft did a complete overhaul to their questing system, and many players found themselves eager to suddenly level a whole bunch of new characters. Sometimes a little creativity goes a long way when it comes to quest implementation.

For the meantime, we’re left with the options at hand– warfronts, dungeons, powering through quests and dynamic content, and the promise of some cool features headed our way. Fear not, altaholics and new players, Trion’s on our side, too.

Some cryptic Trion staff member posts have surfaced on the official RIFT forums this past week. A staff member by the forum name 3 3228466 787 is the main culprit, with posts that are intentionally cryptic, containing poetry, numerical codes, random pictures, and phrases. Fans of the game and forums have banded together in an attempt to muddle through the confusing posts, and figure out what the heck the folks at Trion are up to.

What do we know so far? Here is a summary of the posts, findings, possible theories, and reactions so far. I’ll try and keep this post updated with the latest information, so if you know of any new details, feel free to drop me a line. Special thanks to the awesome people on the official forums who helped come up with this information. It’s all interesting stuff!

Here’s the thread where it all started, on Thursday, May 10th. Telara-style poetry! Staff member 3 3228466 787 then went on to post little hints in other parts of the forums that directed players back to the original thread. These were found in the PvP and Warfront forum, Public Test Shard forum, and Dungeons and Raids forum.

The first cryptic aspect of this post was, of course, the poster’s name. By using a simple phone keypad code, players deduced the name translates to “3 FACTION PVP.” Interestingly enough, “3 FACTION RVR” also works. Either way, big hint.

Here’s the poem:

Nemo surdior est quam is qui non audiet

The voices echoed in chamber halls,
Through valleys wide and darkened den
The time has come for all to heed
For the flesh of Telara shall be rend

As an answer comes with great resound
The drums of war fill the bitter air
Three points the blade, but two edges bleed
Not merely one thrust for the bloody fare

The fog of war, blood bridle deep
The time is now, a chance to decide
Which song you sing, which promise you keep
To bear upon Death’s dear sweet bride

    Growing seeds of domination born
All opposition shall give way
To an empire spanning from sea to sea
The iron Ram the only way

    A promise given forever more
To conquer and to shed all fear
Never to rule, but born of war
The Lion’s vigil to protect those held dear.

The Raven’s consequence of a latter day,
Our destruction will meet no end
Telara is doomed by our ill born fate
Unless we continue to ascend.

The title, which is in Latin, translates to “No one is more deaf than he who will not listen.” The poem itself alludes to a war, two forms that shift into three, a trio of animals, and a decision that must be made in order to end the war. Later on, 3 3228466 787 went on to post a series of posts that contained pictures depicting various images in the poem: here, here, and here.

The first contained an image of a ram, lion, and raven, the second a blue lion’s paw, and the third a combination of the word “machine” (with an image of a machine) added to the word “born” (with an image of a newborn baby). The images depicted seem to emphasis the animals, and the concept of being “machine-born”, which is one of RIFT’s themes, mainly originating from the Defiant faction.

3 3228466 787 posted an amendment of sorts later in the thread, with this:

“Choices are the hinges of destiny.”
~ Pythagoras

…. To Protect

……. To Save

……… To Rule

What is your choice, Ascended?

This seems to emphasize the need to make a choice between three goals. Just by using the knowledge we already know about the factions, we can deduce that “to protect” probably means Guardians, “to save” means Defiant, and “to rule” represents this new third faction. This seems to make sense with the three animal symbols. Ravens have been seen as the Defiant symbol in early beta, and Guardians seem to fit under the lion by the wording of the poem (“The Lion’s vigil”), which would leave the ram to represent this new faction. All of this is pure speculation at this point, of course.

Players went on to theorize that the war described in the poem could allude to the coming of Crucia, which was then shot down by 3 3228466 787, who posted here, with the paw, using the same numerical code. The code, when translated, says, “Wrong guess” and “No Crucia”. Players then went back to the drawing board.

Coincidentally enough, on the very next day, last Friday, Trion announced a huge, new PvP feature being tested during a PTS event this coming week. The actual feature being tested hasn’t been announced, which is unusual for Trion. It’s as if they’re being intentionally cryptic here, too. Coincidence? Probably not.

As to why they’re being cryptic? It’s hard to say, but honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if this is partially an attempt to get a little public notice. Let’s face it– There’s a lot of soon-to-be-released buzz and beta buzz flying around the MMO scene these days. Is Trion using this little adventure as a way to get attention a bad thing? Not necessarily. While many of us are more comfortable with Trion’s usual upfront manner when it comes to announcing new features and additions, there’s nothing wrong in a little creativity and fun every once in a while.

So what does Trion have up its sleeve? The facts seem to open doors to few different scenarios.

Here’s what is safe to say we know at this point:

Three factions are coming to RIFT
Players will have to choose between their current faction and this new one
The factions will be used in PvP in some fashion

Latest update (5/14): Another post cropped up, with another avatar change for our buddy, 3 3228466 787. This one, when translated, means, “PREPARE YOURSELF.” The avatar changes seem fairly random, but so far we’ve seen a couple of different letters appear, starting with “D” and now we see an “O” in a block.

Mystery solved! (5/15): Trion announced what they’re really up to. Conquest– three-faction world PvP! Check out all the details here.

Let’s think about possibilities for a minute. Players have now began to theorize that the faction “split” will happen with Orphiel Farwind splitting away from Asha Catari, and thus the Defiant faction. The lore seems to fit here, as well as the allusion to “machine born” and the fact that this new faction seems to be more aggressive than the two we currently have. If we see this situation or one similar, it’s likely that we’ll be given a choice as to whether to stick to our current faction or join the new one. We may also get the opportunity to change factions altogether, similar to World of Warcraft’s system.

There has been evidence of a new city in development, which seems to fit the theory well. At around 2:38 in the following RIFT anniversary video, some new architectural designs are seen that may fit with this new faction:

Some of those designs were also dataminned in late 2011 by a few sources around the internet. Some of these models were seen under the name “Estrian”, which may allude to the actual name of this third faction.

It’s also possible that instead of seeing a game-wide faction split/switch feature, we’ll see one that’s limited to a particular PvP map, warzone, or environment. I really hope this isn’t the case, but it’s a possibility, given the PvP-centered nature of the evidence at hand. Upon joining the new PvP map/zone for instance, we could be forced to choose a temporary alliance. We could also see something similar to Lord of the Rings Online’s Monster system, where players are able to roll as an enemy faction under certain PvP conditions.

There’s also the possibility that instead of splitting off into three main factions, players will be able to choose a new subfaction, and each animal symbol represents something new entirely. Trion has a lot of options here, and it’ll definitely be interesting to see what they come up with. It’s also interesting to speculate about what type of PvP addition we’re receiving. Will we see a new warzone, or possibly a new open-world PvP map? What about the possibility of RvR? That would make a lot of people happy. RIFT would do very well with some open-world PvP. PvP needs some kind of boost.

RIFT has a decently-sized raiding crew, and there’s a good reason why– Trion’s raids are large, expansive, beautiful, and for the most part, contain some pretty awesome fights. The game’s raiding community is made up of all types of players– those who enjoy a more casual approach to raiding and scheduling raids, those who enjoy the competitive raiding scene, and all kinds of folks in between. With Infernal Dawn (ID) out, and a large portion of those raiders delving deep into the new fights, there’s one large, looming problem that multiple people from multiple groups have experienced– Infernal Dawn, so far, is just too easy.

This is a problem, and not just a problem for the “hardcore” community, that is, the players at the top of the food chain, with the maximum amount of planar attunement (PA) and all the best gear from Hammerknell (HK). Many guilds who don’t even consider themselves hardcore or serious are having the same experience. The fights in ID so far simply don’t have the same oomph, the same adrenaline-punched feeling of not knowing whether this attempt will be the one, the feeling of knowing those couple hours of wipes were worth it after downing a tough boss and listening to the guild explode over voice chat.

That feeling’s pretty damn amazing, and a large part of the reason most raiders enjoy raiding. Hammerknell had a ton of fights that produced those feelings, and many players were expecting to feel the same in ID. Guilds spent months upon months farming HK, farming PA, and building just the right raid force. And now they’re finding themselves a bit underwhelmed, a bit discouraged, and quite confused.

So, what gives? Why the major difference in difficulty between ID and HK? There’s a number of issues behind this phenomenon, I think, and not any one in particular is the sole cause of the difficulty swerve. It’s more or less the combination of all these factors.

First of all, it’s important for players to remember Trion’s own vision for the intended difficulty of ID. They’ve stated it a few times during the raid’s months of development. Here is the most recent source, which was discovered during an interview with various fansites. Here’s an important tidbit from that interview, regarding the difficulty of HK, and what Trion has learned from it:

“One of the biggest schematic thing from all of this, is what is the right amount of challenge that is going to be hard enough but still fun? We kind of phrase it a little more bluntly in the office when referring to it. We don’t want to be punching people in the face with the difficulty of the content. And one of the other core things that we are really trying to avoid is creating situations where the success or failure of an entire raid can be messed up by one person…”

Remember the guilds that felt some fights in HK were far too unforgiving, long, and overly difficult? Remember the guilds that broke up shortly after HK came out because players were dropping like flies, and it was increasingly hard to recruit HK-ready players? Trion does, and the effects are seen currently with ID. The developers wished to create a more balanced raid, one that didn’t punish individual players nearly as much as HK did, and didn’t cause players to want to throw their keyboards across the room. I think they’ve succeeded in that respect. The real question is: Did they take the balancing act too far?

To really answer that question, a few more points need to be looked at. Let’s look at gear for a second. The gap between T1 raid gear and HK raid gear was huge. So huge, in fact, that players complained of epic trash items being better than relic items from River of Souls and Greenscale’s Blight. This large gap caused a few things– it created natural “gating” to take place at certain fights in HK, that is, guilds reached stumbling blocks unless their gear was up to par, and it also made some fights extremely difficult for players who didn’t have full BiS from other raids.

Trion didn’t want this, and this was evident when shortly after, they adjusted many of the stats on gear across the board. They wanted players to acquire gear across an even level, and didn’t want one or two items to make such a drastic difference. The continuation of that solution? Yep, that’s right. Creating the next raid with a much smaller gear gap. That’s exactly what we’re seeing.

The problem with taking this route is two-fold. Sure, it’s easy for players to step into ID with half HK gear and do fairly well. On the other hand, it makes it a little too easy for players with full BiS HK gear to steamroll the place. It also completely negates any chance of seeing a natural gating mechanism in ID, which is disappointing to many guilds that looked forward to reaching a difficult fight then having to halt progression in order to take a couple weeks and farm gear from the early fights.

Again, I can see Trion’s obvious intention here with the lack of a gear gap. I can’t, however, see that it’s at the perfect level of balance. There should be a natural gear incline, and players should be encouraged to farm the earlier raids a bit before entering the toughest raid on the block.

There’s also the fact that Trion isn’t the only group of people that learned a lot in between the time of HK’s release and now. Players have also learned a lot. Guilds have became solidified, strong teams who are comfortable with RIFT’s mechanics, every soul combination, and every buff and debuff. The longer an MMORPG is out, the more time players have to grow comfortable, familiar, and skilled within its world. Trion may need to take this into consideration the next time around, and realize that RIFT’s players are becoming a skilled bunch, and may need more challenging fights as time goes on.

Planar attunement may also be at fault here, at least partially. Trion may not wish to admit that just yet, but I think it’s important they consider the possibility. The pure stat increments are nothing to sneeze at, and let’s face it– RIFT’s all about stats. Stats do make a difference. DPS timers and the health of our tanks do make a difference. Toss enough minor stat adjustments together, and suddenly, the difference isn’t so minor. And we weren’t even given the third tier yet. I’d personally like to see the stat PA nodes toned down considerably, or replaced with something different altogether.

At the end of this bucket list of sorts, I think that’s what the difficulty loss of ID really comes down to. The loss of a gear gap, combined with PA, the fact that many players are fully geared from HK, and the fact that players are more familiar with the game and thus skilled creates a sort of landslide of factors that are currently making a lot of guilds out there cringe.

Did Trion go too far with many of the intended changes? I think so. Is there a happy, balanced medium, where players can experience challenging raids yet not end up wanting to pull their hair out? Probably, but it’s always impossible to please everyone. Many players are discussing the possibility of Trion adding master mode raids, harder versions of the same raids, in order to please all types of raiders. I guess that’s one possible route, but personally, I’d rather not see multiple versions of the same raid. I’d much rather see new content, with more creativity, and a little better tuning.

It’s also important, of course, to remember that there are still a few fights in ID to check out. Maybe our opinions will change after getting to see them. Here’s hoping.

Ten years ago, a California economics professor calculated the real-world size of the economy of EverQuest. Based on the currency value of in-game items on eBay and the like, he found that

if the “EverQuest” universe of Norrath were a country, its per-capita gross national product would be [US]$2,266–comparable to the 77th richest country on Earth and ranking it between Russia and Bulgaria. Platinum pieces, the in-game currency known as pp, end up with an exchange rate of about a penny per pp, making “EverQuest” currency more valuable than the Japanese yen and the Spanish peseta.

Our beloved Rift isn’t competing with the Russian economy, but there are still plenty people out there banking (literally) on persuading you to give them the very real money in your pocket for virtual plat. The #Rift Twitter hashtag is full of tweets worded much the same as the title of this post. Report the spammer, another takes its place. And it seems like every few days the little charge you get seeing an unexpected mail icon in your UI leads to a letdown when it turns out to be a gold spam message. Report the spammer, another takes its place. Googling for ways to make plat isn’t much better. In the time it takes to sift through all the sites trying to get you to buy plat, you could just get rich the hard way.

So, this is not a ‘get rich quick’ guide, but I will tell you how to become Rift Rich in a relatively short amount of time with a bit of effort–and without resorting to enriching spammers.

I define “Rift Rich” as ‘I can buy anything I feel like and still have plenty of plat left over.’ That’s relative, of course (doubtless some players would consider my current bankroll pretty small). I’m “the rich one” in my guild. My alts are well-funded and I can splurge on things I when I feel like it. But there was a day a few months ago when I didn’t have enough plat to buy even one of the four 4.2 plat vendor items I needed every day to make my 20-hour cooldowns. I was felted.

So, here’s how I went from flat broke to Rift Rich in a few weeks: I made things other players want to buy.

Pretty complicated, isn’t it?

My main has two crafting professions (that, not coincidentally, make gear she wears) and one gathering profession. I also have alts with the other professions. Being able to make more of my own components allows me to make plat somewhat faster now than I used to, but that’s not a requirement. One crafter is sufficient if you’re willing to put in some time. It isn’t an overnight process, though. You have to ladder up to it.

While you’re leveling, plat often gets scarce. You need gear and consumables. You have to train skills and buy roles. Soul healing and porting constantly drain you of small (but sometimes painfully relevant) amounts of your money. Cash from mobs is laughable and you can’t make very many things that players with plat to burn want to buy.

But time, as they say, is money. A gathering profession can make steady plat selling things richer players don’t want to spend the time gather themselves. At the time of this writing, fishing is very profitable if you sell what you catch instead of pumping up your own Survival skill. That will change, but right now players are spending large amounts of money leveling Survival fast and making rare top-end recipes. Filling the niches you can won’t make you Rift Rich while leveling but it will garner you enough money to keep yourself in consumables and start building your nest egg.

Selling green items won’t make you much but, since AH listing prices were slashed a few patches ago, it’s now worth checking to find the ones that go for a significant amount over the vendor price. Certain lower-level blues (the rep vendor and dungeon drop recipes) can also be a good way to start building a bankroll. Things everyone needs like bags, healing pots, and catalytic essences always sell, so get the recipes for those kinds of items as soon as possible. Then, once you get a 20-hour item recipe, make it a point to use your cooldown every day and list the item in the AH.

The per item profit on 20-hour items is relatively small. Depending on your server, you might net a few plat on each when the market is good. You’ll eventually have enough plat to start stockpiling. That’s the point at which you flip from scraping plat together to actually making it.

Fresh 50 blue and purple gear is a good place to start. It’s solid gear for new 50s who don’t have a lot of plat, is affordable to craft, and (most importantly) it does sell. Happily, it also needs to be replaced relatively quickly. Nowadays the overwhelming majority of my profits come from a few high-end purples. I make other items occasionally, but those are my staples. I list one of each every few days (I tried using non-BiS augments a few times and it just caused me to have to relist those items repeatedly until they finally went for little or no profit. Your customers for these types of items tend to be newer 50s who aren’t looking to spend 100+ plat on something offbeat. So don’t get cute, use the ‘standard’ augment for the item). I don’t sweat it too much when prices dip a little bit, but I’ll hold off listing any of these items if the going rate is too low to make me at least some profit over component costs.

The other side of the coin is overspending. Avoid it. A faster mount is awesome, but it isn’t worth blowing your whole wad on one at low level. More often than not, it’s easier to get a 90% mount (and a 110% mount at 50) from PvP vendor than to build up the scratch to buy one just to be broke again. Likewise, a sub-50 purple item probably isn’t worth buying unless you’re sure you’ll still want to have it equipped for a while after you hit 50 (few items meet this standard). Most toons won’t be in such gear long enough to make it worth the investment. Instead, get your leveling gear by making it yourself, finding cairns, farming dungeons, and enlisting your guildies and/or asking for a crafter in Trade chat (tip them!) to make your equipment. It’s easier than in real life where you have to eat and pay the electric bill. Just don’t squander what you make and you’ll eventually have more plat than you know what to do with.

Some people “play” the AH. That can be fun and profitable. If you’re into AH playing, you can sometimes corner the market on a few items that sell well and make a nice profit. There’s finally a worthwhile AH add-on, but it lacks some features that would make it a truly powerful tool for hard-core AH playing.

“Getting rich quick” is for gold spammers, who should not be encouraged by giving them your money. Besides, you don’t need them. Rift’s economy is designed to make players buy from each other. If you have some patience and put in a consistent effort to take advantage of that fact, you can be Rift Rich, too.
