budgie race

Yep, as promised during last Friday’s live stream, it’s Budgie Madness! And Chicken Week. And Budgie Week. And hey-look-it’s-another-lockbox week. Whatever you wish to call it. It’s all rolled into one new RIFT promotion that started yesterday. The adorable budgie mounts are the main attraction of the week-long promotion that will run until February 12th.

Players can take part in up to three daily quests a day that involve short race courses in Freemarch/Silverwood, Cape Jule, and Pelladane. Completing the three dailies for the first time will reward each character with a Budgie Trove, which is this promotion’s unique lockbox that has a chance of containing the Frosty Budgie as well as various Tier 1 raid goodies. By completing the dailies, you can also collect Bird Seed. 850 Bird Seed can be turned in for the Ashen Budgie mount from the vendors near the race courses.

Unfortunately, with the length of the event, we won’t be able to pick up the Ashen Budgie just from the dailies (each rewards 10 seed, so 30 a day x 7 days = only 210 seed). Bird Seed can also be obtained inside the Budgie Troves, but generally seems to be rewarded in rather small amounts. Bird Seed isn’t tradeable between characters/alts, either. The good news is that we do get a free Budgie Trove or two, depending on how many Storm Legion-accessible alts we have.

state of the game address 2.5

It’s been a long time coming, but we finally received Daglar’s State of the Game address yesterday. In it, Daglar touched on a lot of information we already knew along with a fair dose of PR-speak, but he did reassure the community that Trion is listening to its playerbase and is always working to bring us improvements in every part of the game from graphical optimization and cross-shard functionality to PvP matchmaking improvements, dimension enhancements, and more.

He also reminded the community that Trion is trying something a little different with RIFT 2.5: Song of Dreams by rolling out new content every week. The goal with this experiment of sorts is to see how players react to the stream of steady, new content to explore since that’s exactly how Trion wants to release the content for RIFT 3.0, which is our second expansion that will take place in the Plane of Water.

RJ Patch Notes

While we’re waiting for RIFT 2.5: Song of Dreams to patch on live shards, there’s one thing we can do to prepare ourselves for this pretty impressive update. We can take a look at the patch notes that were published yesterday on the forums. We’ll post the final version of the patch notes later in the day once the update has gone out, but for now, here’s one tidbit that we all have been curious about since Trion first announced that 2.5 would contain a fair amount of staggered content that will we will see added weekly– the release schedule:

Nov. 13 – Return To Deepstrike (60)
Nov. 20 – Hammerknell Chronicle (60)
Nov. 27 – Greenscale’s Blight Chronicle (60)
Dec. 4 – Drowned Halls (60)
Dec. 11 – Planebreaker Bastion: Aftermath
Dec. 18 – River Of Souls Chronicle (60)

Unfortunately, this means we’ll have to wait a little while longer before testing out the live version of Planebreaker Bastion: Aftermath as well as the new version of Drowned Halls. The good news? There’s still a fair amount of content to explore beginning today. Make sure to check out our preview if you haven’t already done so.

song of dreams announcement

Daglar said 2.5 was “right around the corner” during last Friday’s RIFT live stream. It turns out he was right! RIFT 2.5 is headed to live shards next Wednesday, November 6th. This update will add new underwater content to the waters near Ember Isle that will serve as a test of sorts for the upcoming expansion that’s all about water content. The new underwater content will consist of new story quests, daily quests, carnage quests, two new rifts, new goodies to obtain, and a new zone event.

2.5 will add in a level 60 version of the Drowned Halls sliver as well as a completely revamped level 60 version of Deepstrike Mines that features new encounters and a bunch of new achievements. Four new chronicles will also be accessible at level 60. Three of these are updated level 60 versions of the level 50 Hammerknell, Greenscale’s Blight, and River of Souls chronicles. These are labeled “Intrepid” chronicles. There will also be a new chronicle called Planebreaker Bastion: Aftermath.

We’ll also be getting new Planar Attunement trees called Attunement of Cinder, Nature, and Storm. There’s also a bunch of smaller updates happening in 2.5 including major changes to the Warrior class, new achievements and artifacts to collect from level 60 Expert dungeons, PvP gear, The Infinity Gate dimension, and a whole lot more!

unification plans header

For a while now, Trion’s been working on a plan that will allow us to play with as many other players as possible within the same shards and clusters. This grand plan will eventually allow players from different parts of the world to play RIFT together while each playing the game in their own language thanks to some behind-the-scenes tech magic. While this technology isn’t quite ready for its debut yet, Trion will be moving toward that plan next week when the team condenses our shards and forces players to transfer to specific shards where this “unification” process will begin.

These transfers will happen automatically next week during the normal downtime period: Wednesday, October 23rd for NA shards and Thursday, October 24th for EU shards. All guilds and friend lists will remain intact when the transfers occur, and players will need to do nothing beforehand unless they wish to reserve a name or two ahead of time. Players will have to rename any characters (for free) if their names are taken on the new shard. Here is the list of shards being affected by the merges:

North America

Necropolis users will be migrated to Seastone.
Shatterbone users will be migrated to Wolfsbane.
Threesprings users will be migrated to Deepwood.

Volan users will be migrated to Bloodiron.
Blightweald users will be migrated to Gelidra.
Argent users will be migrated to Zaviel.
Nomi users will be migrated to Brisesol.

patron subscription sale header

Trion announced a new sale to help players gain more RIFT bonuses for their buck yesterday, and nope, it isn’t a sale on Credits. Rather, it’s a sale on Patron subscriptions. The three-month, six-month, and one-year subscription plans are all currently on sale. From the looks of it, the sale will run through the whole month of September.

The best deal, of course, is the one-year subscription plan, which has been brought down to $99 from its original price of just under $120. It’s a great deal if you’re looking to extend your Patron subscription or start one fresh. If you’re already a Patron subscriber, you can even upgrade your account to the sale price and have it automatically shift to that new price once your current subscription time runs out.

Check out the official announcement for more information regarding the sale and all the Patron subscriber goodies.

celebration bonus weekend

While members of the Trion community team are enjoying the weekend at PAX Prime, we’ll be able to celebrate a bit at home as well. Aside from the special live streams taking place, RIFT players will be receiving special celebration bonuses in-game that will last throughout the weekend and even into next week. These bonuses are also Trion’s way of apologizing for the recent lag we’ve been experiencing. Here are the bonuses:

in game bonuses

Keep in mind that even though the in-game message says the bonuses are for subscribers, that message simply hasn’t been updated since the free-to-play conversion. This weekend’s bonuses apply to all RIFT players.

water rift

In a recent interview with the folks over at, Simon Ffinch tossed out a few interesting hints about what’s next for RIFT fans. First, he talked briefly about RIFT 3.0. We already know that we’ll be taking a little trip to the Plane of Water as well as getting four new souls to add to our arsenals, but one thing we haven’t heard a lot about is whether or not we’ll be seeing another level cap raise.

Simon confirmed that we’ll be getting 5 new levels in RIFT 3.0 during the interview, bringing up our level cap to 65. He also emphasized that fact that Trion is calling 3.0 an expansion, but it will most likely be a downloadable-only expansion and it will be free to all players except for the new souls, which will be sold via the RIFT Store.

rhino tempest bay

This year’s Summerfest– RIFT‘s summer event full of fishing, plenty of fun rewards, corgis, and scavenger hunts– has been previewing on the PTS this week, and while we haven’t seen all of the new rewards added for this year, we have seen some of the new content that’s being added. We’ll be meeting some new NPCs in Tempest Bay that offer dailies and the Brevane/Dusken scavenger hunts. All of last year’s scavenger hunts, achievements, and rewards will be returning along with two new sets of scavenger hunts for both Brevane and Dusken. And guess who delivers the quests for the scavenger hunts? A cosmic rhinoceros! Every summer vacation needs a cosmic rhinoceros, right? Sure. We’ll go with it.

Tacitus announced yesterday that Summerfest should move to live shards next week– on July 25th. Get ready to break out the beachwear, as we’ll be seeing swimwear this year! Unfortunately, we won’t be able to preview all of the new rewards on the PTS before they reach live shards, but stay tuned for our updated version of our Summerfest guide for information on this year’s new rhino-sized scavenger hunts.
