carnival 2014 header

It’s that time of year again, folks. The time for balloon popping, glass beads, Alo’s Amazing Popped Corn, adorable pinatas shaped like our favorite bosses, and cool-looking Nebula mounts. It’s Carnival of the Ascended! While the event won’t officially start until 3:30 PM PST later today, yesterday’s patch made this year’s purchasable goodies appear on the RIFT Store as well as plopped a chunk of new achievements for us to chase after (also, check out the RIFT mobile app for the event-themed scratcher mini-game).

From the looks of it, the event itself will be largely unchanged from last year except for a few new items to collect and the new achievements. This preview will go over the new goodies and achievements specifically. If this is your first year taking part in Carnival of the Ascended, feel free to check out our guide from last year as well as our writeup from two years ago for more info about the event itself and what it will consist of.

fae yule 2013 review header

Ah, Fae Yule. It’s always been one of my favorite RIFT holidays. Ever since last year’s addition of the little sledding mini-game and the IAs, it’s always struck me as one Trion’s better world events. There are plenty of things to do, there are plenty of holiday goodies to stumble across in Telara, and there are adorable boglings in Santa hats running around and plenty of things to get drunk on. What’s not to love?

I also have to admit upfront that I’ve been a little harsh lately regarding Trion’s recent cash shop incentive additions to the game. Mech Week and the like were poorly handled in my opinion, as was Autumn Harvest to some degree. Luckily, Trion seems to have taken our feedback to heart and has given us something much better balanced this time around. ‘Tis the season for Fae Yule and for improved holiday events.

fae yule 2013 RJ

Fae Yule will be starting up later this afternoon in RIFT, but we can begin celebrating a little early with all of the new holiday goodies that arrived yesterday after the patch. There are lots of items both new and returning on the RIFT Store and that will be available off the Fae Yule NPCs once they’re live. There are a couple lockboxes, of course, and a menagerie of some friggen’ adorable pets. Oh, and good news for the achievement hounds out there– this year’s Fae Yule has a handful of new achievements to work on finally!

Care for a preview of all the new items? Head on over to Junkies Nation and take a look at our detailed writeup that comes complete with plenty of screenshots. Also, if you’re new to RIFT and this year’s Fae Yule will be your first, make sure to check out our guide from last year to get an idea of what you have to look forward to.

Ah, summer. That time of sticky sunshine, outings to the beach, hot dogs aplenty, bug repellant, and (hopefully) lots of booze-filled evenings. Summer’s hit Telara by storm starting today with the arrival of Summerfest– RIFT‘s celebration of the warm days, the cool nights, the great outdoors, and the prospect of adventure.

Summerfest has more to offer this year with the arrival of new Storm Legion scavenger hunts, achievements, rewards, pets, and swimwear to grab, a new zone event, and special Daily Login Gifts that have a chance of rewarding bonus Credits and Summerfest goodies. There are also all of the returning scavenger hunts, rewards, daily quests, and companions to capture and complete from last year. This guide will cover all of the updates made this year. If you’re new to RIFT, make sure to check out our guide from last year, which covers the scavenger hunts and quests that take place in non-Storm Legion zones.

Last Friday, Tacitus clarified a few points regarding the world event of sorts that will occur when RIFT 2.3 launches and Dendrome becomes accessible. We won’t be seeing a major, multiple-phase world event this time around due to the fact that Dendrome itself will be a permanent part of the Storm Legion world.

The wall itself going away will happen after the initial zone event is completed, but it really is the wall just transitioning into a destroyed state. You don’t need to be there – you aren’t missing any kind of OMG fireworks.

The event itself – it will play when the world event starts and then it will be part of the regular mix of Ashora zone events. The neat consumables that drop will be around for at least the full 2 weeks of the official world event time. Not sure after that – I will ask the person that set up the rewards later. The zone event version and world event launch version of the event are the same.

Yes, the colossi that spawn will get much harder – they were not scaling in power the way they were supposed to and the next test of the event should reflect that. Some of the boss mechanics are getting tweaked as well.

The achievements – a lot of content was built for the world event, but in our internal testing, it didn’t play well as one-time content. All that work is now permanent content – pretty much all new content in Ashora outside of Dendrome is part of that – the border fort dailies, the new IAs in the Ashora rotation, etc.

But again, and let me stress this – there is nothing that needs to be seen at the time the event goes Live that you will miss out on if you aren’t there right then. The entirety of the initial fight will be available as a zone event permanently and any rewards will be available for at least a full 2 weeks if not longer. Unless you really like to see geometry transition to damaged / destroyed states. And if you REALLY like that, maybe we can beg Captain Cursor to make a puppet show of the wall getting destroyed.

Speaking of Dendrome, Daglar also noted that low-level players will no longer be able to access Storm Legion zones aside from Tempest Bay after RIFT’s shift to free-to-play.

carnival editorial title

Despite the fact that we’re right in the middle of RIFT’s second anniversary and Sanctum, Meridian, and the dock area of Tempest Bay are full of cheerful NPCs, colorful balloons, and carnival games galore, there’s one thing missing among the festivities on many shards. One group of things, rather. Well, okay, not things exactly. People. Despite the popularity of last year’s Carnival of the Ascended, this year our carnival grounds seem a little sparse.

Not all shards are experiencing this sparseness, of course, but even on high and medium population shards, folks are noticing the lack of carnival goers. I know I have. It was hard to miss the giant raids of balloon stompers last year even on low population shards. This year, the first day had a few smaller raids forming up on the two PvE shards I frequent, but now even during peak hours there are rarely more than three people wandering through any of the carnival attractions. So, what gives? Why aren’t the carnival games as popular as they were last year?

carnival guide title

This year’s Carnival of the Ascended is now well underway. We have games to enjoy, spacebars to wear out, and plenty of currency to collect. There has been a few new additions this year as well as some pretty hefty changes from last year’s Carnival of the Ascended. This guide will go over all of the reward vendors, carnival games, and the current activities, repeatable quests, and regular quests associated with the first two phases of the world event that marks RIFT’s second anniversary celebration.

Note: Since the event’s in progress, this guide is still a work in progress. I’ll update it as the next phases roll on out. If you notice we’re missing anything, feel free to drop us a line in the comments section below!

carnival candy app title

As part of today’s RIFT 2.2: Carnival of the Ascended major update, we received another update to the RIFT Mobile app. Yep, we finally have a new world event-themed scratcher mini-game. This one is called “Carnival Candy” and can be explained quite simply: Find the anniversary cake and win a prize! The prizes are mostly Glass Beads this time around, but it’s also possible to get rare goodies from other world events like companion pets and wardrobe items. Each Glass Bead win seems to net you between 8 and 15 of them. All-in-all, the mini-game seems to be a decent source of complimentary Glass Beads, although like the most of the games, the odds can be somewhat unpredictable.

Whether you’ve seen him yourself yet or not, if you followed the news leading up to Storm Legion’s launch you know about the Volan encounter. The giant robot appeared liberally on live streams and in trailers, and the combination of the giant scale of the fight and exciting new player mechanics (jumping!) made Volan one of the stars of Storm Legion. But now that the expansion is out and many people are level 60, has the Volan encounter lived up to its billing?

Fae Yule 2012 is here, and snowballs are in season! As part of Rift Junkies’ series of holiday event guides, here is our take on Fae Yule, complete with lots of screenshots, details on the rewards offered, and hints, tips, and descriptions for the event’s quests and activities.

Fae Yule is essentially the same lighthearted, goodie-filled holiday it was last year, except this year there is more to do, and more ways to spend Unique Snowflakes, which will be great for players who found themselves a little overrun with the currency last time around. There are some new items, including items for Storm Legion-leveled players, festive dimension items, and pets and mounts that are both new and returning. The event itself is still largely centered in Meridian and Sanctum, though Iron Pine Peak plays an important role this time as well.
